Designing a VR-Based Road Safety Training for Minors

Client: Independent Research & Development Project

Industry: Education & Public Safety

Solution: Virtual Reality (VR) Road Safety Training for Minors

Technologies Used: VR, Unity, Articulate 360, Gamification, Presence Questionnaire

🚀 Challenge: Making Road Safety Engaging for Young Learners

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among children and young adults (ages 5-29). Traditional classroom-based road safety education lacks interactivity, engagement, and real-world application, leading to low retention and application of safety behaviours.

The challenge was to design an immersive, interactive learning experience that helps children aged 6-16 develop essential road safety awareness and decision-making skills in a safe, controlled environment.

🎯 Our Solution: ‘Safety Squad’ – A VR-Based Road Safety Training Experience

We developed ‘Safety Squad’, a VR training solution that places learners in semi-realistic, animated environments, allowing them to practice safe road behaviours through gamified, scenario-based learning.

To ensure effectiveness and engagement, the solution underwent a structured instructional design process, including prototyping, testing, and refinement.

📌 Key Features:

Scenario-Based Learning: Real-life traffic situations (e.g., crossing roads, cycling, identifying hazards).

Gamification Elements: Missions, progress tracking, and rewards to keep learners engaged.

Interactive Design: Voice commands, gestures, and decision-making tasks for hands-on learning.

Parental & Teacher Integration: Progress tracking dashboards for adults to monitor learning outcomes.

📊 Results: Measuring Impact Through Testing & Evaluation

The prototype was tested using a Presence Questionnaire to assess engagement, realism, and learning effectiveness.

📌 Key Findings:

100% of participants found the VR training more engaging than traditional classroom-based learning.

Immersion & Interaction: Learners reported feeling “present” in real-life scenarios, improving engagement.

Positive Parent & Teacher Feedback: Educators highlighted that VR was more effective at reinforcing real-world safety behaviours than existing learning materials.

User Feedback Led to Improvements: Adjustments included more interactive onboarding, adaptive difficulty levels, and accessibility features for younger learners.

🌍 Real-World Application: Future Scaling & Implementation

With the growing demand for digital and immersive learning solutions, ‘Safety Squad’ demonstrates the potential of VR in transforming safety education. Future enhancements could include:

Localisation for Global Markets (adjusting for region-specific traffic laws).

AI-Powered Personalisation (tailoring learning experiences based on learner performance).

Expanding to Other Safety Domains (e.g., fire safety, emergency preparedness).

This project reinforces our expertise in instructional design, immersive learning, and learner engagement strategies, aligning with modern trends in digital learning experiences.
